Operating Systems (OS)

What are operating systems?

An Operating System (OS) is a type of application that manages the software, hardware and programs of the computer system. It is what is known as the backbone of the system.

There are three operating systems that currently dominate the market.

What are these different operating systems?

Windows (Microsoft)

 Mac OS (Apple)

Linux

What are the particularities of these operating systems?

Windows (Microsoft) - Most users have a preference for Microsoft (90% prefer Microsoft). Interoperability (or the ability of systems, units, hardware to operate together) is a very important value for Microsoft. However, the openness of the operating system is limited and embedded licensing is vital for Windows to protect their software.

Mac OS (Apple) - Apple focuses primarily on the graphical user interface. The design is very important to ensure that the system is pleasant and easy to use. However, the system is very controlled and cannot be modified.

Linux - Linux is a free software and is known to be open source and copyleft. Open source means that anyone can modify and use the code. Copyleft is a license that allows free use and modification of works and programs.
